Note: photos in the carousel show the models in 1/200 scale for sisterships USS Heerman, USS Hoel, etc.  The "Johnston-type" models in 1/192 scale are slightly larger and have a different spent-shell ejection port feature unique to Fletchers built by the Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Corporation ("Sea-Tac"). If you order this product, you will receive the larger 1/192 scale "Johnston-type" models.

Scale 1/192    (1/16 inch = 1 foot)

Recommended for:

  • Bluejacket Shipcrafters 1/16 inch (1/192) scale Fletcher Class Destroyer
  • Scale Shipyard 1/192 scale USS Fletcher DD-445
  • Scale Shipyard 1/192 scale USS Kidd DD-661

This pair of models represents the fighting positions for twin-gun 40mm Bofors cannon mounts, called "tubs".  Tubs of this configuration were positioned astride the aft funnel on 13 Fletcher-class destroyers built by Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Corporation ("Sea-Tac").  The models represent the tubs as they appeared circa 1943-1944.

This significant and very conspicuous addition was made to improve the anti-aircraft capability of Fletcher-class destroyers.  For ships that survived into 1945, the midships twin-gun Bofors mounts were replaced with quadruple-gun mounts and installed within new, larger tubs that were constructed in a position just forward of the aft funnel.

Ships known to have this twin-gun configuration pair of tubs in 1943-1944 include:

  • USS Hailey DD-556
  • USS Johnston DD-557
  • USS Laws DD-558
  • USS Longshaw DD-559
  • USS Morrison DD-560
  • USS Prichett DD-561
  • USS Robinson DD-562
  • USS Ross DD-563
  • USS Rowe DD-564
  • USS Smalley DD-565
  • USS Stoddard DD-566
  • USS Watts DD-567
  • USS Wren DD-568

These two tubs were positioned alongside the aft funnel.  The portion of the tubs' deck that extends outwards from the central deckhouse below is included as an aid to position the parts and to provide strength to the splinter shields.  Trim the deck, if necessary, for best fit to your Fletcher-class destroyer model.

Notice.  These models are designed from official US Navy builder's drawings to represent the real shape and size of the tubs and the clipping room compartments below them.  The models are not scaled to precisely fit any specific plastic or resin kit.  Depending on which plastic or resin kit you own, some adjustment to your plastic or resin kit's parts, other aftermarket parts such as photo-etch or resin mounts, or these 3D-printed tubs, may be necessary for best fit.
