Assembly instructions.  We recommend the following technique (see photos in carousel).  Other techniques may work well, too.

  1. Cut away and discard the two inner fuselage intake duct parts from the Tamiya kit's fuselage (see carousel photo).
  2. Trim away and discard the fuselage part's interior reinforcement ribs to provide space for the 3D-printed ducts (see carousel photo).
  3. Attach Tamiya splitter plate parts B11, B12, B17 and B18 to the fuselage.
  4. Smooth the interior wall of Tamiya kit parts A1 and A2 by cutting or sanding away the small, raised locators for Tamiya pitot tube (venturi) parts C17.  Fill and smooth any ejector pin marks.
  5. Temporarily tape kit outer intake parts A1 and A2 to the fuselage.
  6. Temporarily install the 3D-printed intake ducts and permanently glue them to Tamiya kit parts A1 and A2.  Slow-curing CA "superglue" or slow-curing epoxy is recommended.  Allow glue to fully harden.
  7. Remove parts A1 and A2 with attached 3D-printed ducts from the fuselage.
  8. Apply a small bit of putty or other filler to the interior of parts A1 and A2 just ahead of forward lip of the 3D-printed ducts.  Smooth the putty so that the interior of parts A1 and A2 matches the contour of the intake ducts.  Ensure a smooth interior shape transition from parts A1 and A2 to the 3D-printed ducts' forward lip.
  9. Attach Tamiya kit pitot tube parts C17 to each intake duct interior.  The 3D-printed intake duct wall has a small locator slot to aid in positiong the pitot tubes.  Each pitot tube part C17 should extend very slightly downwards away from the intake wall, not positioned horizontally (see carousel photo of real duct).
  10. Paint duct interior and rear splitter plate panels white or very light gray according to your references.  We recommend using an airbrush or rattle can for best results.
  11. Permanently reinstall Tamiya parts A1 and A2 with their attached 3D-printed ducts to the kit's fuselage.
  12. Paint and install J79 engine inlets to the circular opening at the rear of the ducts.
