This pair of models represents the barrels of the US Navy's 5"/38 caliber gun.  Among naval historians, the US Navy 5"/38 caliber gun is considered the best intermediate-caliber, dual purpose naval gun of World War II. 
 
Lighter and squater than the earlier, heavier versions designed for battleships, aircraft carriers and cruisers, the "Mark 38" version of the 5" twin-gun mount was designed specifically for Allen M. Sumner-class and Gearing-class destroyers, and other ships where weight was a critical consideration.
 
This pair of models features accurate, subtle interior rifling that the Pig Model and Takom kits' barrels lack.  Rifling is composed of 45 grooves with a full uniform right hand-twist in 30 calibers, just like the real gun.  The rifling extends the entire length of the barrel. 
 
On real cannon and rifle barrels, "rifling" is a pattern of helical grooves machined into the internal surface of the barrel.  Rifling increases shooting accuracy by imparting spin on the projectiles passing through the barrels.  Spin helps stabilize the projectiles in flight.
