This model represents the large sponson fit to the starboard side of modernized Essex class aircraft carriers. This sponson supported a boat and aircraft crane (not included). The top of the real sponson was fit flush with the hangar deck.
Some Korean War-era, straight-deck Essex class ships were fit with a slightly differently shaped sponson on the port side, aft of the midships aircraft elevator. A port-side sponson is available separately.
This product was scaled from official US Navy Booklet of General Plans drawings of USS Wasp CVS-18 dated September, 1953. This model is designed to accurately represent features and scaled dimensions of the real ship. It is NOT a 3D-printed copy of any plastic or resin kit's parts and therefore may be sized and shaped differently than the kit parts it is intended to replace. Some adjustment of your plastic kit's parts may be necessary for best fit.
