This Forward, Lower Superstructure model helps convert your 1/350 USS Indianapolis CA-35 model kit to one of the US Navy's most decorated warships, sistership USS Portland CA-33, as she appeared during crucial Pacific battles fought during the summer of 1942, Coral Sea and Midway.

This model represents the forward superstructure including the bridge, fighting top, and forward Mk.27 main battery fire control director.  The Mk.27 fire control director is configured as it appeared prior to the installation of a rooftop radar antenna which was done in late 1942.

In 1942, USS Portland was equipped with two early-configuration, open-top Mk.33 directors (not included).  Both Mk.33 directors appear under white tarps in the photo of the actual ship in the carousel.  Study the photo closely to identify the correct placement of the directors on top posts straddling the fighting top tripod.

Your USS Indianapolis kit includes late-configuration, closed-top directors.  Those parts can be adapted for USS Portland.

Note: to build USS Portland CA-33 from your USS Indianapolis CA-35 kit, you will need to trim away a small portion of the top of each side of your Indianapolis kit's hull and forward upper main deck in the vicinity of the aircraft handling deck as shown in the photo in the carousel.  USS Indianapolis was built as a flagship.  USS Portland was not.  Accommodation for the admiral and his staff was provided by extending Indianapolis' forward superstructure and forward hull rearwards into the ship's aircraft handling deck space.  Portland was not fit with this extension and therefore Portland's forward superstructure is shorter than Indianapolis' forward superstructure.  Portland's aircraft handling deck is longer forward.  To provide space for Portland's longer aircraft handling deck, you will need to cut away a portion of the top of your Indianapolis kit's hull sides  and upper main deck.  Place the Portland aircraft handling deck onto your Indianapolis kit.  Cut away a portions of the upper hull sides and upper main deck to match the length of the Portland aircraft handling deck.
