True Scale: 1/516, to match the actual scale of the Aurora 1/600 scale USS Bennion DD-662
Set includes 5 mounts (turrets) with barrels.
Among naval historians, the US Navy 5"/38 caliber cannon is considered the best intermediate-caliber, dual purpose naval gun of World War II. These two models represent the 5"/38 cal. Mk.30 single gun mount fit to several classes of warships and Coast Guard cutters.
This set includes 2 types of mounts, 2 "Double Knuckle" mounts and 3 "Single Knuckle" mounts.
- The "Double Knuckle" version had a reinforced roof with two "bumps", called "knuckles", that resisted blast from another 5-inch turret firing overhead. Two of these mounts are often seen on Fletcher class destroyers such as USS Kidd DD-661, now preserved as a museum ship.
- The "Single Knuckle" version was normally placed in locations where roof reinforcement was not required. The late version, reproduced here, appeared sometime after 1942, had no stiffeners on the front of the gunhouse and additional fasteners on access hatches. This type of 5-inch/38 Mount is also often seen on "square bridge" Fletchers such as USS Kidd DD-661.
