Here is a downloadable scan of a French builder's drawings of the US Navy's first submarine, USS Alligator.  The drawings were prepared by French engineer Brutus de Villeroi for Neafie, Levy and Company under contract by the US Navy.  de Villeroi supervised the first phase of construction at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  de Villeroi had designed and built submarines in France and one after immigrating to the United States.  The drawing is dated 1863.

 

The original scan was graciously made available to the public by the Historical Naval Ships Association.
